Survey of Academic Faculty at Universities: Contending with the Global Academic Arena During and After the War

20/02/2024

Academia in Israel was dramatically affected by the "Iron Swords" war that began on October 7, 2023, and is still raging. The war hurt many faculty members and students, directly and indirectly. Many of them are active in the military reserves and as civilian volunteers. In addition, it seems that another front has emerged in the form of anti-Semitism and an anti-Israel climate, mainly in academic institutions around the world.
"The Young Academy of Israel" and "Afiq in the Academy: The Forum of the Professors of the Women's University in Israel" conducted a joint survey. The purpose of the survey is to identify the challenges currently facing Israeli academia (mainly faculty members) and to use the findings to guide the policies of university leaders and regulatory bodies - both during the war and in post-war efforts to return to normalcy.
Below are the main findings of the survey. First, we present the demographic characteristics of the survey respondents. After that, we will present the types of harm in academic work that faculty members have experienced and that they anticipate in the future. Finally, we present the solutions that the faculty members believe should be promoted in order to minimize the damage to academic work in Israel.
